The Journal of Clinical Investigation - Preconception paternal ethanol
exposures induce alcohol-related craniofacial growth deficiencies in fetal
offspring
Fetal alcohol syndrome (FAS) is characterized by a range of structural birth
defects, including facial dysmorphia, central nervous system growth deficits
(microcephaly), and prenatal/postnatal growth restriction, which correlate with
the magnitude of prenatal alcohol exposure. Although exclusively attributed to
the maternal consumption of alcohol during pregnancy, multiple clinical studies
and case reports have emerged describing instances in which infants presenting
with alcohol-related birth defects were born to mothers who denied consuming
alcohol during pregnancy.

in a Norwegian Sample of Children with Fasd: Impact on Cognition, Adaptive
Functioning
There was an increased prevalence of epilepsy. A high number of children in
all FASD subgroups had pathological EEG-findings, even in absence of an
epilepsy. Irrespective of epilepsy, ADHD and FASD subgroup, children with
frontal EEG pathologies showed significantly reduced processing speed and
working memory, which may indicate clinical significance and a possible target
for intervention.

Taken together, to our knowledge, this study is the first to examine the
impact of the pandemic in adults with FASD. And while it may be too soon to
predict the long-term effects of the pandemic on mental health, our data
suggest that it will be important that future work also takes into account how
immune function may be modulating mental health outcomes in this population.
