#AVMSD: Once in a lifetime opportunity to protect child health

Europe faces a childhood obesity epidemic; up to a third of 11-year olds is overweight or obese. Youth binge drinking is widespread and causes major harm, while nearly half the European youth tried alcohol before the age of 13. Health problems starting in childhood often last a lifetime.

The current revision of the Audiovisual Media Services Directive (AVMSD)is the opportunity to ensure children are not exposed to the marketing of products that are damaging for their health.

A coalition of health organisations have called on the European Parliaments to minimise the exposure of young people up to the age of 18 to the promotion of these products; for a ban of alcohol and high in fat, sugar and salt similar to that imposed on tobacco; and, the possibility for countries to limit promotion by broadcasts from other countries.
